Everyone needs a breather—participants and families alike. Respite and short-term accommodation (STA) give you time to reset, practise new skills, and return home with more energy. In Ropes Crossing, St Clair, Erskine Park, and Mt Druitt, respite can be the difference between “just coping” and “coping well.”
What respite can look like. STA can be a planned weekend each month, a few nights during school holidays in St Marys, or emergency cover when a carer is unwell in Rooty Hill. A good respite plan includes familiar routines (meals, medication, bedtime) plus one or two fun or skill-building activities: a movie in Penrith, a park walk in Jordan Springs, or cooking practice.
Why it helps. For participants, respite offers a safe change of scene and a chance to try new things with different support workers. For families, it creates time to rest, run errands, or focus on other children. Preventing burnout is serious care.
Transition with care. Before the first stay, we plan a pre-visit call and ideally a short meet-and-greet. We write a one-page “About Me”: likes, dislikes, comfort items, communication, and routines. We rehearse packing and settling-in steps, so arrival feels familiar.
Safety practices. We confirm medication management, dietary needs, allergies, behaviour support strategies, and emergency contacts. We share simple updates during the stay (a photo after dinner, a short message in the morning) so families can relax.
Build toward goals. STA is a great setting for life skills: laundry, money handling, meal planning, or using public transport from St Marys Station. We choose activities that connect to your long-term aims.
Cultural and language respect. Western Sydney is proudly diverse. We match support workers for language where possible and celebrate food and traditions that matter to you.
Respite shouldn’t feel like a last resort; it should feel like part of a healthy routine. Havendoor Disability Care provides calm, predictable STA options for Ropes Crossing, Bowen Mountain, Clarendon, Cornwallis, Ebenezer, Emu Heights, Grose Vale and nearby suburbs. We also provide a variety of disability support for our NDIS participants such as Group and Civic activities, transport assistance, development of daily living and more and nearby suburbs.
